David Wojnarowicz an exemplary exhibition
Summer is over. There is a temptation to plunge suddenly into the harsh vicissitudes of the political life of our country. I prefer to take a break and walk around some exhibitions. And firstly the one dedicated to the American artist David Wojnarowicz which will be at the Reina Sofia Museum until September .A model exhibition of great interest and that will remain open until September
fThe truth is that I had never heard of or seen anything about this New York painter photographer and writer who died of AIDS before turning . For this reason we are very grateful to the Museum for having scheduled a very extensive and excellent retrospective.
The exhibition is titled “ History keeps me awake ” a very accurate CXB Directory summary of the life and work of Wojnarowicz. It must be said to begin with that the exhibition is shocking harsh not at all friendly and there may be visitors who expecting to see a pop artist like Andy Warhol find something much more disturbing.
David had a life full of terrible episodes. His birth in in a broken family his abandonment in shelters from a very young age abuse male prostitution since fadolescence drug addiction... until his marginalization as a queer artist from degraded neighborhoods in New York his infection with AIDS his fight and commitment and activism in solidarity with the sick his radical criticism of the political and economic system and especially the North American health system...

The exhibition traces the artistic evolution of Wojnarowicz who initially focused on literature and music and it was not until the end of the s when he began with photography with a series of photos throughout New York taken of his friends with masks by the French poet Arthur Rimbaud and super cinema and already in the s stimulated by her lover Peter Hujar she focused on painting collage graffiti even sculpture.
fDavid had a prominent presence along with other avant-garde New York artists in the use of warehouses and abandoned buildings on Pier in the city. There is a wonderful video that shows some of the murals that he painted there in the early s and that are astonishing due to the abundant production he produced although it is not said whether these works remain or have disappeared with the demolition of those buildings.
Wojnarowicz's work acquired technical and thematic complexity throughout the s. Using a very diverse material including garbage container lids plaster sculptures murals stencils stencils for spray painting on building walls concert posters of marginalized groups.
